Montepulciano Riserva is sourced exclusively from our oldest and highest altitude vineyard block. Our Montepulciano clusters are sorted three times prior to Appassimento, the traditional Italian method of drying fruit, and fermentation. This laborious technique creates an opaque, full-bodied Montepulciano of unparalleled structure, character, and aging potential.
Montepulciano Riserva is our richest, most full-bodied wine to date. This exclusive wine incorporates the ancient Italian technique of Appassimento. Raffaldini Vineyards' Montepulciano Riserva is intensified with the grape's inherent plum fruit and savory spice flavors resulting in a profound wine that is sure to please the red wine drinker's palate. A limited run of 1.5L magnum bottles; signed by Jay Raffaldini and sequentially-numbered are available.
Food Pairing: At the table, Montepulciano possesses richness and structure, making it the quintessential wine for hearty or rustic game dishes such as baked lasagna or osso buco. Smoky flavors complement the plummy fruit and subtle earthiness of Montepulciano.
Type of Wine: Full bodied wine with moderate acidity and moderate tannins.
Origin: The Montepulciano grape is found in numerous regions around Southern Italy and most famously in the province of Abruzzo. The grape is confused with Sangiovese used for making Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. While increasingly enjoyed as a non- blended varietal, Montepulciano is most classically crafted into two style of wines, Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. Both are blends of Montepulciano and Sangiovese with Piceno typically having a mixture of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Montepulciano whilte Conero is typically a blend of 15% Sangiovese and 85% Montepulciano.
