Benvenuti Primavera: Welcome Spring

Barbara Raffaldini with a new Bota.We hope that everyone is healthy and safe at home. You all are in our thoughts during this difficult time. Despite all that is going on in the world, the vineyard is awakening from winter. Bud break is occurring throughout the vineyard, and the signs of spring are beginning to appear around the property.

Our vineyard crew is hard at work laying out the new vineyard and digging holes to prepare for spring planting (and a new varietal--stay tuned!) that will fulfill our need for more vines in the coming years. In the winery, we received four new bottis to expand our production capability and align our winemaking and stylistic goals.

Raffaldini Vineyards Named Among Top Vineyards Outside of California

"In the rolling foothills of the Yadkin Valley about an hour north of Charlotte, North Carolina, Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery focuses exclusively on dry Italian wines, earning it the nickname “the Chianti of the Carolinas.”

Using estate-grown Vermentino, Montepulciano, and other grapes, Raffaldini embraces the medieval Italian winemaking technique known as Appassimento. Rather than stomping freshly harvested fruit, Raffaldini dries its grapes, resulting in a unique complexity and higher alcohol content."

🍾🍇 Raffaldini February Newsletter

Vintage Update from Vineyard Manager Jason Krug

Winter is a peaceful time in the vineyard.  Vines are in slumber, dormant until warm Spring temperatures tell them it's time to wake and push life into the sleepy buds formed in the previous season. This is the time of the year that the crew bundles up in extra layers and gets to work cutting and shaping the vines for the new 2020 vintage. So much of what the growing season will give us is determined in the pruning season. Each cut and removal of older wood will determine how much new growth will come forward in the spring. By making choices of what to cut, where to cut, what wood to remove and shaping the vine, we are determining how much growth will come in the spring, where that growth will arise from, and how much fruit we want to set. Every grape cultivar from Sagrantino to Sangiovese will be pruned slightly different dependent on its growth habits, how it sets fruit, and what the winemaker's goals are. If I may borrow a quote from The Mandalorian, "this is the way." Pruning these vines takes time and strategy, and we will continue pruning most everyday until March when the vines just start pushing growth.

It’s the height of Prohibition in 1920s Chicago, and there’s a mob war brewing between the South Side Gangsters and the Northern Chicago Mob Outfit. The two ruthless crime leaders Hal Sapone and Beanie O’Dannon have finally reached an agreement on bootlegging practices in Chicago and have decided to pull together resources to undergo a collaborative effort with criminal endeavors.

On the surface, this strategy seems similar to bailing out a sinking ship with tin cups, nevertheless.

Recently, gangsters from the north and south have been spotted together at various speakeasies throughout Chicago, but the tension in the air is always thick enough to be cut with a knife. However, this newfound relationship between the opposing mob bosses has served, thus far, to inhibit gratuitous bloodshed as in the past. Part of the success of this truce is that both crime bosses have found new dames, thereby intertwining more mutual relationships between the two factions.

The two sides will meet at Raffaldini Vineyards to resolve all remaining differences.  Will these two underground organizations resolve their disputes or will a massive melee erupt, rekindling the fatal flames between them?  This is where our dinner begins.

Discover the Secret Season At Raffaldini

Welcome to the Secret Season

In January, as the vines sleep, we are preparing for the next vintage. Pruning, tucking, nurturing the vines, and in the winery, carefully blending, tracking the flavor profiles of the vintages lying in wait. The secret season is a time to let your senses explore. Enjoy the slower pace, the wide open spaces, the cool and quiet stillness of the season. Take an impromptu trip and enjoy the beauty of winter at Raffaldini that is perhaps the best kept secret of all.

Vintage Update from Winemaker Chris Nelson

Winter is good for the young 2019 wines as they are left to rest after completing their secondary, Malolactic fermentation, which converts malic acid to lactic acid, giving the wines smoother mouthfeel and texture. The wines receive two small doses of sulfur dioxide to help preserve their fruit characteristics as oxygen slowly penetrates the oak staves to help the wines develop on a phenolic level (i.e. tannins, structure).

We are also focused on the blending of our first 2018 red wines to be released in March, our 2018 SPQR and 2018 Bella Misto. Both wines are shaping up to be excellent, especially for the difficult growing conditions in 2018, and will be welcome additions to our tasting room lineup. Both of these wines will be bottled in the coming weeks.

Give a Little Chianti in the Carolinas this Christmas

Thank You for an Incredible Year!

We are grateful to everyone who visited Raffaldini Vineyards this year. We are thankful to our staff, family, and friends for making this such a wonderful destination. We are also proud of all we have accomplished this year:

  • 97 Points, 2017 Grande Riserva, San Francisco Wine International Wine Competition
  • 92 Points, 2017 Grande Riserva, James Suckling
  • 91 Points, 2017 Sangiovese Classico, American Wine Society
  • 91 Points, 2017 Il Falco, American Wine Society
  • 90 Points, 2017 Sangiovese Classico, James Suckling
  • Best Premium, Non-Bordeaux Red Blend >$25, 2017 Grande Riserva, San Francisco Wine International Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2017 Grande Riserva, NC State Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2016 Meditazione, NC State Wine Competition
  • Best Winery in Wilkes County, Wilkes Journal Patriot

Less than 20 cases left of this Raffaldini wine 'named one of the best in the World.'

Our 2017 Grande Riserva is almost sold out with less than 20 cases remaining of this remarkable vintage. The proprietary blend of Sagrantino, Montepulciano, and Petit Verdot made with Appassimento received a 97 point score and Best Premium Non-Bordeaux Red Blend at the San Francisco International Wine Competition held last month. A double gold wine must go through a rigorous judging process and all the judges deliberate and must agree on the wine's quality. Double Golds are only awarded to the very few entries that receive a Gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel; these are among the finest wines in the world.

Meditazione Available Now

Our 2016 Meditazione is now available in the Villa Tasting Room and online. In Italy, a dessert wine is also known as a meditation wine for it is consumed at the end of the evening meal when one can relax and reflect upon the day and all that has transpired. It gives pause, slows one down, and allows time for what is commonly referred to as an "exhale moment.” Because it is a limited production wine, Meditazione will be bottle sales only.
