An Update from Jay Raffaldini

I hope this finds everyone well and looking forward to the holiday season. After fielding many questions I trust this email can answer some of them as well as provide an update on a few odds and ends.

Firstly, Florence has come and gone and it definitely was not a lot of fun arriving smack in the middle of harvest. But as I noted earlier, we chose to let our bigger reds hang as they had not fully ripened yet. We took some serious body shots and were definitely staggered by a haymaker, but we fought on and I am pleased to say that the remaining grapes that were able to weather the storm turned out great. Unfortunately, we just don't have a lot of them. Such is the nature of farming and this is why one of my favorite expressions is: "There are no farmers who are atheists as we are always praying for something."

On a related vineyard note I must regrettably report that our experiment with planting Nero D'Avola from Sicily has failed. Having planted 4,000 vines in various locations on the property none survived the cold Januarys. I knew this was a risk when I started, but I gambled anyway and lost. In its place we are planting Barbera a far more cold tolerant variety that produces a similar high acid taste profile.

On a more positive note, after thirteen years of begging, pleading, and cajoling the DoT has finally paved all of Groce Road (see photo above). So for the very first time you will have an entirely dust-free experience when visiting Raffaldini. I have never had my patience tested so much but in the end (I guess) it was worth it.

Finally on a personal note those of you who know me well are aware that the decision by Coca Cola to selectively phase out the soda TaB has left me reeling. After drinking eight cans a day EVERY day for thirty eight years I am a bit unsure how to proceed as I simply cannot stand the taste of water and other sodas just don't measure up. If anyone is able to secure a twelve pack of this heavenly-made beverage, I am willing to swap one bottle of Sangiovese (value $29) for every twelve pack delivered to Raffaldini. .

Raffaldini Wins Big Awards in American Wine Society Competition

Our Grande Riserva was awarded 93 points and Double Gold, the highest designation among the judges. Following closely behind was Montepulciano Riserva receiving 91 points and Sangiovese with 89 points. Last but not least was our first ever dry Sparkling wine Auguri earning an impressive 88.

Each November, the Society hosts commercial and amateur wine competitions, using AWS-certified wine judges to provide consistent, objective evaluations of each wine. The commercial wine competition began in 1986, making this event one of the most esteemed and longest-running wine competitions in the United States.

Our reds are ready for blending and we need you to help us create the blend for the Raffaldini Grande Riserva! Each session is a two-hour education wine experience led by Owner Jay Raffaldini and will be held in the barrel room allowing you to experience the winery during the wine making season. This is an opportunity to hone your winemaking knowledge and ability, learn more about grape varietals, and make a few new friends in the process.

Meet Chef Maria, learn the techniques involved in the creation of each dessert and why they pair perfectly with each wine. Tickets are $30 + tax per person and include a sample of 4 wines along with a dessert pairing for each wine.

Wine Club Appreciation Day
Saturday, December 15 | 1pm - 3pm

La Famigilia Raffaldini cordially invites all of our wine club members to our wine club member appreciation day. You'll enjoy live music, samples from local vendors raffles for door prizes and special tastings all day!

James Suckling Ranks Three Raffaldini Wines 90+ in 'Best of USA' Tasting

Three Raffaldini wines, the 2017 SPQR, 2016 Montepulciano Riserva and, to-be-released MCCCXLVIII (1348) scored among the top of more than 800 wines in a comprehensive United States wine tasting conducted in Virginia by Mr. Suckling two weeks ago. Yoga, Hike & Lunch at Raffaldini Vineyards with Village Yoga Studio
Sunday, November 4 | 9:30am - 1pm

Unwind and reconnect in a beautiful natural setting with a yoga class, vineyard hike and lunch. A 75-minute all-level yoga class will be led by Maureen Stitt and Bonnie Phillips of Village Yoga Studio, overlooking the vines of Raffaldini Vineyards in the glory of fall foliage. Class will be followed by a hike through the vineyard led by Jay Raffaldini.

Afterwards, enjoy a luncheon paired with a glass of our award-winning wine. The yoga class and hike are suitable for those in good physical condition.
