James Suckling Hails Raffaldini 2017 Vintage

Wine critic James Suckling recently reviewed three wines from the 2017 vintage. This spectacular vintage was marked by persistent warmth throughout the growing season and relatively dry conditions. All of these wines are available now

2017 Grande Riserva - 92 points

Roasted-fig and tobacco-leaf aromas combine with suggestions of bitter chocolate on the nose. Some dried fruit. Rich and elegant, this has a solid sense of balance with soft tannins and a lovely texture. Blend of montepulicano and sangiovese. Drink or hold.

2017 Sangiovese Classico - 90 points

A pretty sangiovese with tea-leaf, red-fruit and flint character. Lightbodied and tight. Bright acidity. Silky at the finish. Already drinkable but can improve with age.

2017 Bella Misto - 88 points

A spicy red with dark-cherry aromas and flavors. Slightly funky. Mouth-coating. Round and fruity. Montepulciano, petit verdot and sangiovese. Drink now.

Harvest 2019

This nearly unprecedented streak of dry weather with the last significant rainfall event of less than 2" in late August left us with warm, dry temperatures all throughout the ripening season, culminating with what is simply the best harvest in the history of Raffaldini Vineyards. Stay tuned!
Harvest Update From

Winemaker Chris Nelson

2019 was an intense harvest at Raffaldini. This harvest was my first in North Carolina after 17 years in California.  Early on in the growing season we could see potential for some quality fruit so we made plans to focus on Appassimento (the Italian drying method used to more intense wines such as Amarone). We were able to push 28 tons of fruit through this drying process so we can expect the same full-bodied, well structured wines routinely produced by Raffaldini. During this harvest we were able to experiment with some new techniques on our Vermentino, as we look to produce a more robust style in 2019. Something new for our fans to look forward to in 2020. All in all, it was a wonderful harvest, and it's still not over as I have a number of wines still fermenting
