Harvest Has Begun!

Our winemaking team has been hard at work this week picking the first fruit of the 2022 vintage! Our newest varietal, Trebbiano was the first off the vine as the newest component in our sparkling wine program. We look forward to the crisp fruit flavor and creamy texture this grape will bring to our traditional method sparkling wine, Auguri. Stop by the Villa during the month of September and you may catch harvest in action!
Traditional Amphorae Added to Winery

We are proud to announce the news of our two new arrivals from Sonoma. These two custom made concrete Amphoras each weighing two and a half tons will be used to further sharpen and enhance our Vermentino Superiore. Concrete and its predecessor clay were frequently used to ferment and age wine instead of oak barrels and more recently stainless steel. While stainless steel does not impart any oak flavors it also does not allow oxygen to exchange which enhances wines. By contrast oak barrels allow oxygen to exchange but can impart flavors that dilute the purity of the fruit. Concrete will deliver the best of both of both worlds, oxygen passage and no flavor pick up. We are very excited to see these wines and you will be able to taste it when the 2022 Vermentino comes out on March 2023.

When life was simpler and slower and being together was the rule not the exception, one wine was quite commonly found in Italian restaurants and grocery stores, and that was a Chianti sold in straw bottles known as ‘fiascos." Everyone emembers these bottles adorning checkered cloth tables and once the wine was consumed, they became candle holders with the red and green wax drippings on the bottle. What many did not know is that the fiasco bottle held 1-liter worth of wine, 33% more than a standard bottle which is probably why so many people left the dinner table very happy.

We have crafted a beautiful Sangiovese blend called Gallo Nero (Black Rooster in Italian, the symbol of Chianti). The wine is more structured than the typical Sangiovese blends we make as I wanted it to pair with much more than “red sauce." It is a gem and when you purchase one of these commemorative bottles you will also receive a red or green candle so the Raffaldini fiasco (no pun intended) can have a second life.

Jay Raffaldini and Chris Nelson in conjunction with Barbara Raffaldini and Bella Ventures Travel, with a group of wine club members while on a 10 day tour of the Piemonte region of Italy, stopped in for a visit at the production facility of Gamba SRL. There they met with Mauro Gamba  and saw where the botti (large oval and round wooden casks which are the equivalent of 11 barrels) that Raffaldini uses in its winery, are produced.  Located in Castell’Alfero d’Asti  (in Piemonte Italy), the Gamba family has handed down the ancient art of the master cooper from father to son for seven generations.  As early as the 1800s, ovals and round botti, along with barrels and vats were being built in their workshop for wineries in Italy and its neighboring countries.  Today Eugenio Gamba and his son Mauro continue the tradition of master cooper in a new workshop not far from the original one in which production was carried out for over 150 years until 1991.  Today, traditional methods are now supported by technology, but Gamba’s mission remains the same, which is to focus on selecting the finest wood so that the wines aged within each vessel they craft will be the highest quality produced.

Saturday, July 23 – Fiano Release

We are proud to announce the release of a new white wine made in conjunction with our neighbors, Sotrio Vineyards. Fiano is an Italian grape that grows in the Campania region and in our opinion will make wine distinctive enough that it will, in time, rival Vermentino. We made 50 cases and have labeled the wine a vineyard designation, specifically Raffaldini Fiano, Sotrio Vineyards.

Join us for the release party from 1pm to 3 pm at the winery. This free event is for wine club members only. After we taste the Fiano, we will taste some early-style wine from the 2021 harvest. We will be serving light food to enjoy with your tasting. Please click to RSVP. The event starts promptly at 1pm so please arrive on time. Fiano will be available for sale to the general public at the Villa the following weekend and we don't expect it to last very long.

Jay Raffaldini Fall 2022 Wine Club Letter

August 2022

Ciao Amici,

I hope this letter finds everyone happy and healthy. If you are new to the Raffaldini Wine Club, welcome! With each semi-annual wine club package, you will receive a letter from me describing the wines, why they were chosen, and updating you on all activities happening at Raffaldini Vineyards.

This package includes the following:

2 bottles of Raffaldini 2020 Sagrantino
2 bottles of Raffaldini 2020 Montepulciano Riserva
2 bottles of Raffaldini 2021 Desaria
The Winemaker’s Notes associated with the wines
Recipes that we encourage you to enjoy with the wines
Invitations to upcoming signature events at Raffaldini

I begin the first section with some happy news I had not been able to share during the last three years.   We had a normal spring with no late frosts or freezes so we will have a bountiful harvest of grapes!  Of course, in terms of quality it all comes down to the weather in the August 15th to September 30th window but as of now things are looking very good.  This is especially exciting coming on the heels of our best quality harvest ever in 2021.

As is the case with every Raffaldini wine release the whites and reds come from different vintages (years). Specifically, the reds are usually at least two years prior and whites the prior year.  Given the variability of the weather in our wine region we can often get vastly different styles of wine which we try to mitigate through the Appassimento drying process and varietal blending. Unlike the superb 2021 weather, 2020 was a very challenging harvest and second only to the utterly miserable 2018 harvest.  So when we talk about the two reds in this package from 2020 and the white from 2021 we want to emphasize the saying that when the weather is great “wine is made in the vineyard” and when it is challenging “wine is made in the winery cellar”.

The 2021 Desaria is our Vermentino based white blend wine which thinks and acts like a red wine as that is how we made it.  Wine club members will remember that two years ago we decided to split our Vermentino production and diverted an equal amount to the production of Superiore and the other to the production of Desaria.  In a nutshell the difference is that the Vermentino Superiore is made in a style more common in Sardinia with a technique called whole cluster pressing fermented in stainless steel which increases aromatics and freshness. By comparison, the Desaria uses our Appassimento drying process on the grapes which are then fermented and aged in oak bottis.  Also for the first time this year we blended in some white (yes white) Montepulciano aged in oak.  This created a rich and a very full- bodied white wine closest to the style of Vermentino made in the beautiful Tuscan seaside of Bolghieri. This is a white wine that pairs perfectly with fish and is also full bodied enough to go with white meat like chicken, turkey, or pork.

Our expectations for the 2020 reds were low given the challenging weather we endured that year.  One early signpost of our ability to overcome this was the success of the earlier release of the 2020 Sangiovese Classico.  Of all the grapes we grow Sangiovese is the most susceptible to not being able to stand up to a challenging harvest.  My winemaker Chris and I spend countless hours blending through endless permutations including down to the half of one percent level. The wine turned out incredibly smooth with classic Sangiovese fruit and earthy dustiness and soon become very popular in the Villa Tasting Room. Using that roadmap, we turned out attention to the Montepulciano and Sagrantino.

As difficult as Sangiovese is to grow here, Montepulciano is as easy, given its grape structure (thick skins, medium sized berries and loose clusters), so we had a strong foundation from which to start.  The 2020 Montepulciano is very fruitful and structured with softer than usual tannins which makes this wine enjoyable immediately.  It will age for five years but can not go the distance of a decade or more like the 2019 vintage. It’s an excellent enjoyable wine.

Finally, the 2020 Sagrantino turned out to be and I quote my winemaker Chris, “sneaky good.” Sagrantino continues to excel in the vineyard with the only downside being it is a low yielding grape, so we struggle to get enough of it.  We are going to plant another acre or two but unfortunately, we are nearly planted out so there is not much more we can do. The 2020 Sagrantino has those famous gripping tannins that I adore but is also framed with bracing acidity to allow this wine to go on well into the next ten to fifteen years.

Speaking of the vineyard we are planting a new grape called San Marco which is a cross of two northern Italian varietals from the region of Alto Adige.  Those grapes varietals are Teroldogo and Lagrein, both of which can produce very dark and deep wines.  I am determined to have one wine made from northern Italian grapes and I believe I have finally found the right grape after twenty years of searching and replanting.

On a personal note, I am very gratified to see the vineyards around us take shape and find their branding.  My long-term plan was to always have Raffaldini Vineyards surrounded by other vineyards run by likeminded souls, and this is happening now as new tasting rooms and Villas are under various stages of construction. One day in the not-too-distant future you will have four (and possibly five) Italian style vineyards adjacent to each other which is unlike anything anywhere.  So exciting!

As a diehard fan of Star Trek (the original and Next Generation, not Voyager nor Deep Space Nine) I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Spock -

“Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”

Our warmest wishes to all of you.

Salute!

Family Days:
Monday, July 4 - Independence Day

While the Fourth of July may be an American holiday, Italians are always up for a festa, especially when it involves wine, so stop by and add some Italian style wines to your 4th.
Bring the entire family together at Raffaldini Vineyards to celebrate our nation's independence. Enjoy a holiday in wine country, and celebrate the spirit of our nation's birth with grilled sausages from Dog's R' Us.

Vinello Wine Release
Saturday, July 2

We are releasing our very limited production Vinello series to the general public beginning Independence Day Weekend!

Vinello takes advantage of a tried-and-true Italian tradition of making a low alcohol, fizzy, flavorful wine by rehydrating the grape skins and pomace with spring water. This tasty beverage is frequently consumed by the vineyard and winery workers during their daily meal breaks.

We made three different types of Vinello – a Bianco made from Vermentino, a Rosato made from a co-fermentation of Appassimento Vermentino and Sagrantino, and a Rosso made from Teroldego. Collect them all and cool off during these hot summer days!

Saturday, September 3 - Gallo Nero Release

Vinello Series Wines Now On Sale for Wine Club

During the excellent 2021 grape harvest, we experimented with an old Italian winemaking method known as Vinello to great success. Vinello is made from rehydrated grape pomace that has completed its work of making excellent wine. Rather than place the pomace in the vineyard to provide nutrition for vines, we decided to referment the pomace by adding enough sugar and water to produce a low alcohol, yet distinctly flavorful, wine.

This low alcohol beverage is frequently consumed by the vineyard and winery workers during their daily meal breaks. The French call their version Piquette. We made three different types of Vinello – a Bianco made from Vermentino pomace, a Rosato made from a co-fermentation of Appassimento Vermentino and Sagrantino, and a Rosso made from Teroldego.

Girasole - Gold Medal, 92 Points

We are honored to share that our 2021 Girasole received a 92 Gold and was one of the highest rated rosés. Interestingly, this is the first year that we made our Girasole in a new way, using gently, whole-cluster pressed, 100% Sangiovese grapes, which brings out notes of watermelon, strawberry, and bubble gum on the nose of this delicious summertime rose wine. The solid acid backbone makes this wine refreshing on the palate as well as pairing well with lighter fare dishes like salads and fish.Just in time for warmer weather.

Vinello Series: Release Party at the Winery
May 21 | Wine Club Members Only | $35 per person

Raffaldini is pleased to announce our very limited production release of our Vinello series to you, our loyal wine club members on Saturday, May 21st from 1 PM-3 PM. This will be a wine club only event! We will be joined by High Country Boards to bring you a new exclusive wine and food pairing experience.

In total we produced 100 cases and look forward to sharing them with you during this release. Due to limited quantities, we are asking that purchases be limited to one case of each wine. This event will be $35.00 + tax per person and will included a glass of each new wine, paired with 2 food samples. Each wine club member is permitted to bring 2 guests to the event. To purchase your tickets please click the link below.
